I don’t think there will ever be a time in India where film music will be less popular: Pavithra Chari

An accomplished classical and cross-genre vocalist and composer, Pavithra Chari has been an independent artist for approximately ten years. Recently, she has ventured into film music, lending her voice to movies such as Maamannan, Dasara, and Ponniyin Selvan-1. She has had the opportunity to work with renowned composers such as AR Rahman, Santhosh Narayanan, and Devi Sri Prasad. In a recent interview, the singer discusses the current state of the independent music scene and how her work as a playback singer is enhancing her growth as an artist.

Chari expresses her gratitude for being a part of the twomember band Shadow and Light, alongside her husband Anindo Bose. They had the privilege of being visiting artists at Berklee College of Music during the spring semester of 2018. Moreover, they had the opportunity to contribute to Shuruaat, the debut album of Berklee Indian Ensemble. The band re-recorded their previously released song “Dua,” which was originally featured on their second album, “Elements” in 2016. It was a delightful surprise for Chari and Bose to learn that “Dua” would be included in the album. They feel honored and elated to have their original composition featured alongside esteemed artists like Shankar Mahadevan, Vijay Prakash, Zakir Hussain, and Shreya Ghoshal. To top it all off, the album received a Grammy nomination in the prestigious Best Global Album category. This recognition was a meaningful gift for Chari and Bose, celebrating their ten years as indie artists.
